| | If it'll keep the drunk drivers off the road then by all means do it! Is there a reason why 18yr olds need to drink? Does it need to fall back more on the parents? I know there are 12-13yr olds out there who go out each weekend and get on the piss... 15yr olds getting into town, clubs, bars... Whats the point of them drinking? I like the recent ads that state "Its not the drinking, its how we're drinking" and its too true. Drinking is a great social thing in my opinion, but getting drunk every weekend is something Im against. |

| I was in high school not too long ago. everyone would be getting wasted on drugs instead of alcohol because the black market makes it more ready available. The same thing will apply for 18 year olds if the drinking age is put up, but even then how do u provide proof of age for a NATURAL PERSON?

| | The drinking age (well actually not the "drinking age" as anybody, of any age, has always been able to drink anything they want to without gov't interference, but rather the age at which a person may buy alcohol was raised by Jenny Shipley's government in a cynical attempt (in my opinion) to normalise the process of demanding ID all the time and to gain extra votes - there are a lot of votes to be had fromj 18 to 20 year olds. What is the point in raising it again? I think it is too late! The damage has already been done. My friend's 10 year old has just got out of hospital after suffering from alcohol poisoning - he got it from his 18 and one week old friend, it is unlikely he would have been able to get a 20 year old to buy him alcohol, there is an incredible difference between an 18 and a 20 year old. How could it possibly lessen the number of drivers on the road who have been drinking? There is no epidenic of teenage drink drivers! There is the old argument that an 18 year old is old enough to vote, go to war, do absolutely anything else any other adult can do so why should he not be able to buy alcohol? That argument seems rather like a cliche, but I cannot argue with it. It makes sense. |

| | I think the government should raised the drinking age from 18 to 20 years old because I feel that if they lower the drinking age at 18 or below 18 that could make the teenagers more crazily obssessed on drinking. Raising the drinking age to 20 years old will make them more mature and more well behaved. |

| | Parliament today confirmed that MPs will get a "conscience vote" on changing the law with regard to the age at someone may legally buy alcohol. That means that it is the personal "conscience" of the particular MP, not a consensus of the conscience of their electorate. Once again we are being told "the people of NZ are far too stupid to form a proper opinion on a subject and our "elected representatives" (that's got to a joke, that term, particularly in cases like this) have to make decisions for us. However, like I said before, Jenny Shipley's obsession with ID cards and her desire to gain extra votes was what was behind parliament's decision to lower it in the first place. Remember, lowering it was also the result of a "conscience vote", and it was against overwhelming public opposition. Also like I said before, what is the point now? The damage has already been done. |

| Drinking habit is bad and dangerous to us. we avoid it from teenagers. Also drug is major problem in society. Drug spoil our life slowly. So we must get awareness and spread awareness among young people.
